After answering a BBC advertisement for trainee film assistants, Alan J W Bell soon found himself on the route to becoming a film editor at Ealing studios. Editing films for Light Entertainment Group, Alan worked on Morecambe and Wise, Top of the Pops, Crackerjack, Ripping Yarns and The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, the last two of which both received BAFTAs. Alan’s memoirs Last of the Summer Wine: From the Director’s Chair is his honest account of making the series for nearly three decades, and a revealing insight into what went on behind the scenes of the world’s longest-running comedy production.
Gina is the sole survivor of the Campbell dynasty, founded by her grandfather Sir Malcolm Campbell, who set 13 records on land and water between the wars. Donald set out to emulate his father and many friends suggest that he forever felt in Sir Malcolm’s shadow.
Helen Womack has lived in Russia under three Kremlin leaders. The Ice Walk offers a tour of Russia that takes us behind the official Kremlin line into an intimate sphere of life that few foreigners penetrate. She tempers her love affair with Russia with bone-chilling accounts of the hardships people faced as their country underwent enormous changes after the breakup of the Soviet Union. Womack’s work as a foreign correspondent brought her into contact with Russian officials, artists and writers, but her most fascinating stories come far from the beaten track, as she ventures out of Moscow and encounters the absurdities of life among the Russians.
