Scarlet Women, Mistresses in History

Following the success of their feature on Radio 4's Woman's Hour, four of Britain's best-loved and most widely-read historians gather to shine a light on a too-often ignored area of history. Our panel, otherwise known as the History Girls, will uncover the fascinating and hidden histories of some of England's most famous mistresses. Alison Weir brings to life the story of John of Gaunt's mistress and eventual wife, Katherine Swynford. Tracy Borman will tell us of Henrietta Howard, the enigmatic and largely forgotten royal mistress and confidante of King George II. Sarah Gristwood reveals the tale of Mary Robinson royal mistress, writer and romantic. Kate Williams tells the story of Emma Hamilton's incredible rise to fame and her passionate affair with Lord Nelson.

Dare you share a meal with the master of murder? John is the author of the highly praised Charlie Resnick novels. Flesh and Blood, his first novel featuring retired Detective Inspector Frank Elder won numerous awards. In 2007 John won the CWA Cartier Diamond Dagger for sustained excellence in the genre. He is also a poet, dramatist and occasional broadcaster. A ticket for this event includes a 3 course lunch with coffee/tea to follow. Please be seated by 11-45 am.


Anne Fine Family Event

Anne is a distinguished writer for both adults and children. Her novel Goggle-Eyes won the Guardian Children's Fiction Prize as well as the Carnegie Medal. Adaptations of Bill's New Frock and Goggle-Eyes have been screened by the BBC. Her novel Madame Doubtfire was a Hollywood blockbuster starring Robin Williams. Having written over fifty books for children of all ages, Anne became the Children's Poet Laureate in 2001. Anne's work has been translated into over thirty languages and in 2003 she was awarded an OBE. An inspirational event for all the family! Suitable for 7 years +

An African Odyssey with Fran Sandham

A must for intrepid trekkers or armchair travellers! Critically acclaimed author and former Rough Guides editor Fran Sandham will talk about his gruelling solo walk across Africa. Without backup, he travelled 3000 miles on foot from Namibia's Skeleton Coast to the Indian Ocean. His book Traversa: A solo walk across Africa is the account of this remarkable journey.

Terrance Dicks was born in East Ham, London, in 1935. After graduating from Cambridge, he began to work in the advertising industry before moving over to television as a writer. In 1968 he began working on Doctor Who. He has written over fifty Doctor Who novels and has also been a prolific author of books for children. This icon of science fiction will appeal to all ages.

Make a date with Kate! This household name is the presenter of the BBC's From Our Own Correspondent on Radio 4 and a top selling author. She is best known as the BBC's former Chief News Correspondent. She has reported on conflicts from the invasion of Iraq to war in the Balkans. She also covered the storming of the Iranian Embassy by the SAS, the US bombing of Tripoli and the student demonstrations in Tiananmen Square in Beijing. Kate Adie OBE has twice been named as Reporter of the Year by The Royal Television Society. Don't miss out - tickets will sell fast for the nation's favourite!
