Simon is the parliamentary sketch-writer and diarist for the Guardian. He also writes about wine and TV for the Spectator and is the former host of Radio 4’s News Quiz. He is the author of numerous books including The Hamster that Loved Puccini. His collection of parliamentary sketches covering the Blair era, The Hands of History, was published in 2007.

Last year’s festival host James Nash makes a welcome return to Scarborough. Poet and performer James will close the session with topical poetry.

Soak up the sunshine with Carol Drinkwater’s tales of Provence.

Carol is known to many as vet James Herriot’s wife in the Yorkshire television series All Creatures Great and Small. Carol found new fame through the writing of her Olive Farm series. In these books, her challenge was to be accepted by her stepchildren, save a derelict farm and replenish a dwindling bank account. Recently invited to work for UNESCO, she aims to promote the olive heritage trail around the Mediterranean.

Sample the olive oil and share the flavours of the region, accompanied by a glass of wine.

End the festival on a high note!

Louis de Bernieres is re-visiting Scarborough with an exciting new tour. The author’s new novel A Partisan’s Daughter is set in London during the winter of discontent. It is the unlikely and compelling love story of a middle aged Englishman and a young Serbian woman.

The author is joined by flautist and keyboard player Ilone Antonius-Jones. Louis will read from his work and together they will perform a selection of Serbian/Eastern European folk music, Bob Dylan numbers and some classical pieces on a variety of instruments.
