All workshops are open to young people aged 10 to 19, or up to 25 with additional support needs. The workshops are free of charge but please book your place first.

Poetry Drive

Get on board the GIMI bus to work with a poet and travel to different inspirational local locations and write some lines of poetry in response to what you see. It doesn't matter if you are a published poet or never written a line in your life. Enjoy seeing our surroundings and express your feelings in a different way. Bring along a picnic and have a great social evening.

Postcards to the Future

If you could meet yourself as an adult in the future what would you tell yourself? What advice would you give yourself? What would you tell you not to forget? This is a chance for you to create a message, poem, story or something completely different to the you of the future. You can then work with a bunch of different mediums to create the picture of the postcard that you want to send. We will even give you a stamp so you can send it to yourself. This is a fun session using writing and visual arts for young people of all abilities.

The members of Scarborough hip Hop School, called Embolic, Furbz and Blind Mouse amongst others, are becoming rising stars playing all over the country, recording their own releases and even shooting their own music video. In this fun workshop they will teach you the basics of rap, DJ and beatbox. It doesn't matter if you have never done it before, these rappers are passionate about music and want to share their passion with you.

Word Mask Totem Pole

This is a brilliant art, design and sculpture workshop for young creative people of all abilities. You will get a chance to use modroc plaster to create a mask and add it to our wonderful totem pole. We then want you to use words to think of different ways you describe yourself or how others may describe you and add those as the decoration of your masks so you become part of this great eye catching sculpture that will go on display.

Cartoons and Illustration

You will get to work with Northumberland artist and illustrator John Craggs to design your own works of genius. John wants you to bring in a page of your own writing or choose a scene from one of your favourite books and he will help you bring the ideas to life visually in either cartoons or illustration. John will show you the way he works as well has help you come up with your own ideas. The only skill you need is a bit of enthusiasm and a good imagination (and of course a great story also helps).
